Compass Box The Double Single Blended Scotch Whisky
Compass Box Whisky is a Scotch whisky producer, headquartered in Chiswick, London. Founded in 2000 by John Glaser, it produces a range of single malt, single grain and blended scotch whiskies.
Compass Box Whiskys first commercial release was the blended grain whisky, Hedonism. The Peat Monster a blend of heavily peated Islay and medium-peated Highland malts was released in 2004, followed a year later by The Spice Tree. Unfortunately, The Spice Tree broke Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) regulations for its use of French oak staves and production halted. A reinvention was later launched in 2009 that complied with the SWA regulations.
Hedonism, The Spice Tree and The Peat Monster all belong to Compass Box Whiskys ‘Signature Range’, which also includes Asyla and Oak Cross. The ‘Great King Street’ range of blended Scotch whiskies that contains 50-percent malt was established with the creation of the Great King Street Artists Blend in 2011 and was further added to in 2014 with the release of the Glasgow Blend. Compass Box Whiskys third ‘Limited Range’ boasts limited edition blended Scotch whiskies, such as Enlightenment, Flaming Heart, The Circus and This Is Not A Luxury Whisky.
The company sparked controversy again in 2015 due to the disclosure of too much information on their Flaming Heart and This Is Not A Luxury Whisky labels, specifically the detailing of the distilleries, cask types, ages and proportions in the final blends. The company was duly contacted by the SWA and informed that according to EU regulations it is forbidden to reveal the age when talking about a bottle of aged spirit unless only one age is detailed and that is the age of the youngest alcoholic component.
Glaser thus launched the Scotch whisky transparency campaign in an effort to enable producers to have the option to fully disclose a blends composition. Compass Box Whisky has also created the 2016 limited edition Enlightenment in response to the EU regulations.
