The story of Charles Goodnight is an interesting one, mostly because his great-great nephew Bill Foley is in the running for the most-interesting-man-in-the-world title.
The West Point graduate and former Air Force pilot is not only the head of Foley Family wines, but also the owner of the Las Vegas Golden Knights NHL team, among a litany of other wild adventures over a stellar career. With the Charles Goodnight Texas Bourbon, Foley is paying homage to his Lonestar lineage and the so-called Father of the Texas Panhandle: a 19th century cattleman who was larger than life.
While the Charles Goodnight story is compelling enough, it has little to do with the actual whiskey (other than theyre both originally from Texas). The Bourbon itself was made at an undisclosed source, but it clocks in at 6 years of age and a whopping 57.5% ABV with an intensity that is unbridled in every way!
The whiskey is so intense that review site Breaking Bourbon calls it a Bourbon that will put hair on your chest.
Drinkhacker wrote that, the whiskeys aggressive, immersive nosecomes across with all the subtlety of a cattle drive.
That being said, Drinkhacker also loved the Bourbon, writing that the whiskeys sweet edge is what keeps this whiskey from getting lost in a sea of similar, overblown offerings. The blend of raisin and maple on the attack gives the bourbon an immediate charm, evoking fig liqueur and the syrup at the bottom of a jar of Maraska cherries. This punch of fruity sweetness is enduring and lingering, keeping the well-toasted barrel char at bay long enough to evoke the freshness of the orchard, a pot of jam. While its not something Id sip on every day, its definitely worth trying!
We agree here at Mission. Texas Bourbon is definitely an acquired taste, as the warm summers and dry climate create bold, concentrated, and leathery flavors that can be overpowering for all but the toughest whiskey drinkers. If its adventure you seek with your whiskey, Charles Goodnight offers both an exciting story and an exciting product.
Bottled at 57.5% ABV and at six years of age, theres a lot going on in this bottle.
