Speri Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2016
A deep garnet red in color, it has an ethereal bouquet of dried fruit. On the palate, it is full-bodied, warm, mouth-filling and dry. A substantial wine of rare elegance that lends itself well to aging.
Excellent with richly flavored main courses based on red meat, such as braised meats and game, and perfect with mature cheeses. It can also be enjoyed on its own at the end of a fine dinner.
Critical Acclaim
95 James Suckling
Plenty of dried fruit with figs and sultanas, as well as mushrooms. Full-bodied, yet integrated and polished with fine tannins and a fruity finish. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but another year or two will bring it even more together.
94 Wine Enthusiast
Made with organically grown grapes, this full-bodied, plush red has inviting aromas of baked plum, new leather, camphor and violet. Smooth and enveloping, the delicious palate doles out mouthfuls of fruit cake, baking spice, fleshy blackberry and licorice. Velvety tannins provide softness while fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Drink through 2031.
94 Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
From a vineyard site in Fumane, one of the five villages in the Classico subzone of the appellation with a mix of volcanic soils comes this richly concentrated red wine from a terrific vintage. The organic Speri 2016 Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico Sant’Urbano is fleshed out and generous, even at this relatively young stage in its evolution. This hearty and open-knit wine offers dark cherry fruit and black plum, with spice, tarry spice and campfire ash. There’s nothing not to love about this bright but full-bodied Amarone made with 70% Corvina and Corvinone, 25% Rondinella and 5% Molinara, all aged in bottle and tonneaux.
92 Wine Spectator
A well-knit, medium- to full-bodied red, with light, taut tannins married to bright flavors of wild cherry, tangerine peel, star anise and brambly herb and underbrush, ending with a racy finish. Drink now through 2031.
