Initially, some commented that it seemed closer to a barrel proof version of Buffalo Trace Bourbon than the original George T. Stagg. Yet, it quickly gained the attention of enthusiasts as it capitalized on the growing popularity of the Stagg name and barrel proof bourbons in general. In 2021, Buffalo Trace announced that Batch 18 would be the first batch to lose Jr. from its name and simply be called, Stagg.

“In the glass, Stagg Batch 18 reveals a deep, mahogany hue, promising a rich and full-bodied experience. The nose is an aromatic journey, with notes of dark chocolate, dried fruits, and a hint of leather. On the palate, the bourbon unfolds with a symphony of flavorsdecadent caramel, toasted oak, and a robust spice. The high proof amplifies the intensity, providing a warming and satisfying mouthfeel. The finish is long and lingering, leaving impressions of vanilla, toffee, and a subtle smokiness.”

“Stagg Jr. Batch 15 Nose Strong and bold. Right away theres a prominent showing of oak and vanilla. A touch of that dusty warehouse comes through, and then it rolls into a creamy nougat and caramel. I catch just a twist of apple on the nose but its between waves of spice and dark candy. Palate Theres a noticeable throttle twist of heat that wakes up your senses quick, but as it fades it leaves a really satisfying coating of toffee and caramel on the palate. The darker flavors really play a big role here. Oak and spice play off caramel and a seriously enjoyable butter toffee that Ive not experienced in the seven or so batches of Stagg Jr.Ive tried.”
